The Rosecrans/Marquardt Grade Separation Project will improve the safety and track flow of the Rosecrans Ave/Marquardt Ave intersection. The Rosecrans/Marquardt grade crossing is traversed by more than 112 freight and passenger trains and 45,000 vehicles in a single day. With such heavy through traffic, this intersection has been identified by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) as one of the most hazardous grade crossing in the state. Providing a grade separation will significantly improve safety, eliminate delays and enhance the environment.
This is a project of regional and national significance to passenger and freight rail traffic. The proposed project will grade separate this intersection from the existing diagonal at-grade crossing and substantially enhance the safety and traffic flow on surface streets. It will also improve the efficiency of train movements along the rail corridor. The project will also permit the completion of a third mainline track, improving the capacity of regional and national passenger and freight movements. The project will also have the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing vehicle idling through the elimination of railroad gates made possible by grade separation.
This project is led by Metro in cooperation with the City of Santa Fe Springs, City of La Mirada, Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railway, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), Amtrak, California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Metrolink and California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA).
